The Evansville community and theatre world are mourning the passing of Richard “Dick” Engbers, a beloved artist, mentor, and visionary whose passion and leadership helped shape modern theatre in the city. Dick, who passed away peacefully, leaves behind a lasting legacy defined by creativity, dedication, and an unwavering love for the performing arts.

A lifelong Evansville resident, Dick attended Memorial High School and later studied business at Lockyear Business College before discovering his true calling in theatre. His journey with the Evansville Civic Theatre (ECT) began in 1965, when he first appeared as Yellow Feather in Little Mary Sunshine. From that moment, Dick devoted his life to nurturing local talent and building a thriving artistic community.

Over the following decades, Dick became an indispensable part of ECT—acting, directing, and ultimately leading. He played a vital role in transforming the old Columbia Theatre into the permanent home of Evansville Civic Theatre, affectionately dubbing it “The Glittering Gem of Fulton.” His dedication to creating a space where art could flourish helped establish ECT as a cornerstone of local culture.

In 1977, Dick became the theatre’s first full-time professional Artistic Director, a position he held until his retirement in 2004. During his tenure, he set new standards for community theatre—raising the bar for quality, professionalism, and passion. Under his guidance, countless productions came to life, and hundreds of performers found not just direction, but inspiration. Dick had a remarkable ability to see potential in others and to draw out their best, both on stage and in life.

Known for his humor, kindness, and uncompromising commitment to artistic excellence, Dick was more than a director—he was a mentor, a teacher, and a friend. He created a space where people felt valued and challenged, where creativity was nurtured, and where community came alive.

The Evansville Civic Theatre community shared a heartfelt tribute:

“If there’s anyone who can be called the architect of modern theatre in Evansville, it’s Dick Engbers. He built not just a stage, but a family. His legacy will forever echo in every performance and every actor he inspired.”

Dick’s passing leaves a profound void in the hearts of all who knew him, but his impact endures. Through his tireless work, Evansville Civic Theatre continues to thrive—standing as a living testament to his vision and love for the arts.

Rest in peace, Dick Engbers.
