It is with profound sadness that the family of The Honorable Babatunde I. Akowe announces his passing. A devoted husband, loving father, cherished son and brother, and a deeply respected public servant, Judge Akowe’s life was a testament to integrity, compassion, and unwavering dedication to justice and community. His passing leaves an irreplaceable void in the hearts of all who knew and admired him.
Judge Akowe’s journey was one of purpose and service. Elected to the New York City Civil Court in Kings County’s 2nd Municipal Court District in November 2023, he began his 10-year term in January 2025 — a historic and proud moment for both his family and the Brooklyn community he so faithfully served. His career was marked by excellence and empathy, and though his time on the bench was far too short, his influence will be felt for generations to come.
A proud Brooklyn native, Judge Akowe devoted his life to advancing fairness, opportunity, and representation. His extensive public service included roles with the Brooklyn District Attorney’s Office, the New York State Unified Court System, the New York City Council, the Department of Corrections, the NYC Employees’ Retirement System, the New York State Governor’s Office, and the Department of Consumer and Worker Protection. In every capacity, he embodied leadership rooted in integrity, accountability, and a deep respect for the people he served.
Colleagues and community members alike remember Judge Akowe as a man of principle — steadfast, compassionate, and courageous. “You always knew where he stood,” one colleague said. “He led with conviction and grace, not convenience. In a world where that’s increasingly rare, he stayed true to his values — and we admired him for that.” His election to the judiciary was not only a personal achievement but also a celebration of Black excellence, symbolizing perseverance, leadership, and progress for Brooklyn’s vibrant and resilient community.
Beyond his professional achievements, Judge Akowe’s greatest joy came from his family. He was a devoted husband to Lauren and a loving father to their two daughters, Adia and Amara. His family, friends, and community will remember him for his warmth, humility, and the light he brought into every space he entered.
The Brooklyn Democratic Party honored his life and legacy, stating: “Judge Akowe will forever be remembered as a leader who advocated for our communities with dedication and integrity.”
As we mourn this immense loss, we also celebrate a life lived with purpose, compassion, and courage.
Rest in power, Hon. Babatunde I. Akowe.
Your dedication to justice, your love for family, and your service to community will continue to inspire and uplift all who follow in your path.
